Event Reviews: Pretty City Boston 9/14/2011

As an "Urbanite-ista" : An Urban Fresh Socialite/Fashionista, lol I have the privilege of attending many different parties, gala's, & events in & out of town. I've been to some of the most elegant, & some not so elegant of events. Let's admit it, we all love anything FREE & even better... GIFT BAGS! I've gotten "swag bags" & have been extremely disappointed with the lack & quality of samples I received that I'd (let alone anyone else ) would never use & books I'd never read... I'll leave those other national "shopping" events nameless!... BUT Pretty City's Beauty Event was different altogether. It was intimate,elegant,FUN & filled with lots of pampering!

I got my eyebrows shaped (Amazing Job Laura B. of Salon Euphoria!) I got a massage, a facial massage, paraffin wax for my hands, a mani, a make-up application, the option to get my hair done, which I opted against because it was already LAID, wine & a chance to shop with some of the best vendors! But furthermore, I was quite impressed with Pretty City's event! Everyone was catered to & seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. I attended last years event at Estate as well, but this year's focus seemed to be pampering the guests, & they definitely improved on all aspects! You left feeling gorgeous, & special to have been there! Now, for the part we've all been waiting for, THE GIFT BAGS... I was literally blown away with the FULL SIZE, useful contents of the bags! This has to be the absolute BEST gift bag I've ever received from any similar shopping/beauty event! Everyone received the same things & no one thing ran out. My only complaint was that they wouldn't allow me to take my extra gift bag for my guest at the end of the night after all guest received their bags. I was meeting up with my guest after the event b/c she couldn't make it down in time. Every other "shopping/beauty" event always allows you to retrieve the gift bags especially if you have the tickets to receive them. But that doesn't change my opinion on the event. I can not wait until the next Pretty City Boston event!

Expression Of STYLE: "Breaking ALL The Rules!"

Let's face it, we've all heard some of the ridiculous "Rules of Fashion", and in my personal opinion, they're all rubbish, poubelle, basura, TRASH!!! This is exactly why our slogan is "Style Over Fashion" If you have real style, it's natural & comes from within, incorporating your every being! Style is never forced & should never be confined by any rules! If you must follow any fashion rules, they should be your own! I for one have a few minor rules that I've set for myself that I live by... 1) I will not wear fur (Mink, Fox,Lynx etc.) before Thanksgiving or after Woman's History Month! 2) I just will not EVER wear stockings with open toed shoes! Just throw on some slingbacks or a "BAD" pump if it's that serious!

Here are a few of the ridiculous "Rules of Fashion" I've heard over time...

1) THE MOST FAMOUS... "Never Wear White After Labor Day" - The real "rule" is Don't wear white shoes before Memorial Day, or after Labor Day. It doesn't apply to clothes... But who cares? Rules are meant to be broken!

2) Don't Over Accessorize, or "Less is More" - I say "More is More! Never tone it down!"

3)Shoes,Bags, & Belts must always match, as well as your socks... "Socks play an incredibly important role in a man's life." - Oscar Wilde

4)No Denim with Denim... "Blue jeans are the most beautiful things since the gondola." - Diana Vreeland

5) To be beautiful, one must suffer! "Beauty is Pain" ... "I personally would not have plastic surgery. What the hell for? It looks ridiculous."- Calvin Klein

6)Match your tie with your shirt

7) Never mix prints & patterns/ Don't wear too many colors at once ... "I like light, color, luminosity. I like things full of color, & vibrant." - Oscar de la Renta

When dealing with style/ fashion, you must be confident & know what works for YOU & wear it without giving a damn! Dare to be uniquely yourself... Your REAL Self! Remember most rules are meant to be broken at some point... Just don't become a fashion Victim!

The vision was so unique and enticing that we made the highly respected publication in the arts community let alone Boston,THE KAY BOURNE ARTS REPORT . Check it out the article below:

"The adventurous interpretation of the 1975 choreopoem (performed at the Colonial Theater in Boston at that time and now a classic of the American theater), had its one night only appearance on, JUNE 17 at Hibernian Hall. The hall is home to the Roxbury Center for the Arts (a component of the Madison Park Development Corp. and where its cultural programs are staged). The current program director of the busy center is Dillon Bustin, a musician and student of world cultures.

EXPRESSION OF STYLE: What's Your Style Recipe?

There are many important parts that make up your own unique recipe of style, but there's always the key main ingredients that are most important! Add all of the key ingredients & your well on your way to developing a killer style! I will elaborate weekly on all of the key ingredients... This week is Image!

Add 1 equal part * Image/Wardrobe/Fashion Sense: What you wear makes up about 75% of someone's first impression of you! The image you portray is the start of what others will view you as before you even have the chance to open your mouth and say a single word. That initial impression is usually the basis on which people will monitor your every move, word, & action without notice. So make sure your gear is always on point & giving off a positive impression of who you are.

Just because style/ fashion is an expression of who you are does not mean you should wear whatever you want in any social setting/ event. At times you must take heed to the message you want to convey. Clothing speaks volumes in a language of it's own, so you must be aware of what your clothes are saying about you! You should want to leave a positive lasting impression verses a negative one.

Your wardrobe should consist of VARIETY, variety, & oh yeah, more variety! You should know when & where to wear what's appropriate. Here's an example...

~ Let's say you get an invitation to the most exclusive, the most grande black tie gala of the year, where only dignitaries & the "who's who" will be in attendance... You SHOULD NOT, & DARE NOT wear the following: (I'm 100% all for expressing yourself through style & individualism b/c thats me, but there are some boundaries)

Cute... But DON'T!

Gentlemen: Although quite stylish you just do not wear the following to a "Black Tie Gala" designer jeans/khakis, button up shirt and or sweater, a sports jacket/ blazer, with combat boots or designer sneakers/shoes! You just don't! A Tuxedo or a nice tailored (DARK) suit are what's appropriate. (You can definitely make the tux your own by sprucing it up with the right accessories)

MAJOR DO!!!

Ladies: Although quite stylish in a different setting, you just don't wear the following to a "Black Tie Gala" a short, tight, skimpy, cocktail dress or "Freak'em Dress"! No skirts, leggings, shorts or boots! A nice tailored gown, LBD, or dress, accessorized to your liking is key!

MAJOR DON'T!!!

FIERCE "Freak'Em Dress"... But Not for Black Tie

Again those looks might be stylish to some, but they're just inappropriate at a "Black Tie Gala", let alone any gala ... Even "Black Tie Optional". Just like you wouldn't wear a tux or a gown to the office, it's all about common sense, & style etiquette! As always, make it your own, use common sense ! Stand out & make your mark by leaving a strong, lasting, positive impression!

Simplified, style is how we express ourselves from the inside OUT! Please note that fashion is only one part of the STYLE EQUATION!

Bright cOloR and prints (animal, pattern, or multi cOloR) have always been a part of my wardrobe and if I can have it my way, it would be a part of everyone's closet! My love for cOloR and prints stems not only from my West Indian culture, but I truly believe it's complimentary to ALL skin tones and lets face it, it is an attention grabber ;-) My gals Rihanna, Kelis, Solange and Gwen Stefani are unapologetic when it comes to smearing away the lines of black and white.

I realize that some of us may not be as daring to walk out in an ensemble of all prints and/or color (no worries!), so my suggestion to those of you is to pick one piece whether it may be a top or bottom, and compliment the "louder" piece with something more subtle such as a pair of black, white or demin bottom/top and/or pair it with a solid color shoe and purse. Gold, white, and other prints are my personal preference. Moral of the story is don't confine yourself to only a world of solids, life is so much more fun with cOloR!

Expression Of Style

For as long as I can honestly remember, I've always been intrigued by fashion! I loved everything Bold, Avant-Garde, "Risque", Rock & Roll, Chic, & of course Designer! What can I say? I was exposed from an early age!
I'd always watch my mother so intricately while she dressed & applied her make up. It was a process so nonchalant but meticulously precise! I studied her & wanted to be just like her (go figure). My sister & I loved playing 'dress up" in all of her designer clothes (of course when she wasn't home haha!). So naturally when it came down to matters of my own style it was fitting for it to be " My Perogative", I wore what I wanted if it felt right.

I admired shopping more than anything, more than Barbies, more than Cabbage Patch Kids, even more than Chuck E. Cheese! Whenever we went shopping, I'd literally get lost in my own world. I'd be picking out all of the shoes/outfits that I thought were cute, & for some strange reason in my elementary mind it made sense & felt right! But Most of all, it Looked RIGHT!
I thank her for always allowing me to be ME!

We will be showcasing Sankofa, ...

... a very important and controversial film about the naked truth of slavery, humanity, and freedom. Haile Gerima, the director of the film, invites us to travel back to a moment in our history that can be uncomfortable and deemed as irrelevant for some of us but in the very essence of Sankofa, we have to know where our ancestors came from in order to move forward.

Our launch party was a huge success! We conquered our goal and mission , to provide people with a bold yet refreshing evening while bridging the gap between fashion & social awareness. Our launch party was held at the beautiful National Center of Afro American Artists in Roxbury (visit it if you haven't already!) and we collaborated with AIDS Action Committee to help raise awareness. We were able to share a magical evening amongst our friends, peers, fashionistas, and local artists. So to all of you, a Special Thank You for sharing the magical moment with us!!
